Many people travel with their families for the long 4th of July holiday weekend. One thing that's for sure to be on the 4th of July itinerary? Fireworks. While fireworks make us humans happy, full of patriotic pride, and joy- it can be quite the opposite for our furry pet friends.

Many pets suffer extreme anxiety from fireworks and the loud noises and commotion that comes with this patriotic holiday. With the hustle and bustle that comes with the 4th, be sure to keep these tips in mind to protect your pet. It might just save their life!

Pet Safety Guide to Surviving July 4th

Never leave fireworks around pets!

This applies to fireworks left in the open, as well as lit fireworks. It is never a good idea to expose your pet to the potential dangers from fireworks, matches, lighter fluid or open flames for that matter.

Safety First.

Your best bet? Leaving your pet at home. If you and your family plan on going to watch a public fireworks display, it is probably best to leave your pets at home in a safe, quiet, escape-proof area in the house. Pets can become overwhelmed by the unfamiliar crowds, loud noises, disorienting sounds etc.

Be Prepared.

July 5th is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters. So many pets do escape and get lost on the 4th of July caused by overwhelming anxiety and fear which causes them to run away. In the chance that your pet does escape, it's smart to be prepared for whatever happens. Did you know that the percentage of lost pets increases around 30% on the 4th of July? Make sure your pet always wears a collar with up to date ID tags with your current contact information such as your phone number and address.
