Pet Food Preparedness

As we approach the holidays and the colder weather all across the country in the months ahead, it is important to take a peek at your pet food supply. This time of year tends to be a busier time for couriers and shippers alike, not to mention bad weather can severely delay a pet food shipment or order arriving to your door. Check out our top tips to prepare for the months ahead and ensure your pet food supply is always AOK.

BACK UP PET FOOD SUPPLY

Word of advice: It’s always better to have too much pet food rather than not enough pet food, or run out completely. Take it from us and our Nature’s Select Customers…there is NOTHING WORSE than going to feed your dog and you realize you’re at the bottom of the barrel! It’s important to understand your Pet Food Pattern (otherwise known as a Reorder Cycle) to avoid this problem altogether; however, we also recommend having a back up supply just in case.

Many of our customers across the country like to have a small 5 lb bag of dry dog food or an extra case of wet food on hand for the winter months. This is a great way to add to a pet emergency kit, or simply have an extra pet food supply on hand for upcoming travel. Another reason to have extra food on hand is to prepare ahead for the holiday season. Will you have family traveling with their pets visiting? That is more mouths eating dog food in the house, so the more the merrier!

REORDER AHEAD OF TIME

We cannot stress enough the importance of understanding your pet food cycle. Typically speaking, one of our large bags of 30 lb dog food will contain 120 total 8-oz cups inside. If you are someone who feeds your pup 4 cups a day - 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups in the evening - you can divide 120 cups in the bag by 4, which will equal 30 days. This is how long 1 bag of our 30 lb dog food will last you. This means your reorder cycle or pet food order pattern is 4 weeks total, or every month.

No matter what your reorder cycle is, we recommend placing a pet food reorder at least 1 week prior to running out of pet food completely. Like we said above, it is always better to have too much kibble than too little.

WEATHER & HOLIDAY DELAYS

Finally, the next few months bring the hustle and bustle of the holiday season along with storms and bad weather conditions. If you are a customer who lives in a part of the United States that tends to experience bad weather, we recommend placing an order 2 weeks earlier than you normally would to ensure plenty of transit time to arrive prior to running out. That way in case a storm does arise last minute, your dog can still receive her pet food and not go hungry or miss a meal. Sadly dogs cannot talk, and their paws make it difficult to use a cell phone or the internet. If they could reorder their own pet food, they would - but being a prepared pet parent can come in handy to avoid food emergencies.
